A system is defined as an object or a set of objects which we are studying for a particular problem. A physics problem can be made easier if the system(s) in the problem are arranged so that there is nothing outside of a system which is interacting with the system. When we work problems involving force, we will often explicitly define a good system for our problem, and we will try to set up our systems so that our calculations are as easy as possible.
