Thermal Expansion
When the temperature of a substance is increased, the particles making up the substance begin moving faster, and as a result the particles move farther apart. On the macroscopic level, this almost always results in an expansion of the substance upon heating. Almost without exception, as the temperature of a substance increases, the volume of the substance also increases. Conversely, as the temperature of a substance decreases, the volume of the substance almost always decreases.
